With no executive spots there’s nothing to differentiate where students should park besides free parking throughout the lot. No paint marks, no designs to separate the classes apart.
Lake Stevens High School does not allow senior painted parking spots, some students support a change that gives seniors the creative privilege to decorate a spot just for them. Others question the fairness and upkeep that would come with painting parking spots.
Seniors say that the idea of senior painted parking spots would be a great way to express themselves.
“The seniors could get to show off their cars and paintings as soon as people came into the parking lot,” senior Gabriel Kogel said.
Other students agree that senior exclusive parking spots would be helpful when it comes to finding parking spaces but under certain conditions.
“I think if we were to do this we should only do it in the back parking lot since it’s so empty sometimes and farther away from the school,” senior Koen Knutson said.
Students also make the argument that there would be risks if given the ability to paint their own spots.
“People would paint really dumb things and it could cause fights between people if someone parks in someone else’s spot,” Knutson claimed.
“Yeah I definitely agree, and if someone has a really bad car it could leak a bunch of fluid on your spot which would ruin it,” Kogel added.
Administrators say senior exclusive painted parking spots are not currently an option mainly due to limited parking and added complications on top of that. Scott Sifferman explains that the school does not have nearly enough parking spaces for all seniors to have their own spot due to the fact that if a student isn’t at school the spots could get complicated. It was also stated that if it was an option clear rules would need to be put in place, plus additional costs, and repainting each summer would put extra stress and work on administration.
“You would have to shut down the parking lot and redo it every year,” Scott Sifferman said.
Student exclusive parking would cause issues between students and staff which makes it hard for the staff to justify the idea being executed.
This discussion reflects a larger perspective on senior privileges among Lake Stevens High School. The overall idea regarding exclusive spots leans more towards the fact that Lake Stevens High School is not able to participate in this specific activity. While the overall idea comes across as fun and a creative outlet, the cons outweigh the pros. Luckily we have many other ways for seniors to leave their mark on the school during their time here.
