As the popularity of AI increases, so does the demand for RAM, which is memory for computers, and this has increased greatly leading to a limitation in its supply, which has caused the price to go up to such a level. Not only does this problem affect companies, but students are also affected, especially those who want to use computers at home. Experts say that the price will continue to rise with the increase in AI popularity.
Since systems that use AI need more powerful memory, the demand has increased much faster than supply. The result is shortages which caused computers to be more expensive for both companies and everyday users.
AI memory is basically “sold out” worldwide from too much demand. Companies are struggling to keep up with the need for the high performance memory which data centers are buying out for their AI’s.
RAM prices have risen multiple times since the start of 2026 and have shown that RAM isn’t the only component that is increasing in price, it’s also processors. The problem is not something temporary but a visible change in the market because of AI. Between July and December of 2025, the price of RAM had a 166% increase from the previous price and has only climbed more since then. Seeing how production is still struggling to catch up becomes evident.
“I didn’t realize how much AI affects hardware until now. If these shortages keep getting worse, other parts could get a lot more expensive,” senior Christopher Rapues said.
The rising costs are affecting everyday users too, this includes students or anyone who is planning on getting a new computer or upgrading from their old one.
“If RAM prices keep going up, it’s going to affect regular people too, not just companies. Even upgrading a laptop or building a new PC is super expensive now,” Rapues said.
As computers become more expensive to upgrade or replace, access is becoming more difficult and limited for students, and this will only get worse with AI’s expansion.
Demand for RAM is expected to stay very high. Though some companies work to increase production of things like RAM, the shortage and the rising prices are not stopping yet. In the end, this shows that certain technology quickly advancing can make a large effect on access to everyday tools like computers.
