On Jan. 30, 2026, 3 million pages of the Epstein files were released to the public. Within those files, emails, photos and videos from and relating to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein can be found. Moreso, within those files many people were named including President Donald Trump, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Elon Musk and more. Now people are being stripped of their power and are trying to explain themselves. Many powerful and influential people are named in the files. Whether they took part in Epstein’s sex trafficking activities is unknown, but even being named in the files is negatively impacting them.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act, which was signed into law on Nov. 19, 2025 requires the Department of Justice (DOJ) to publicly publish all unclassified records, documents, communications and investigative materials that relate to the investigation and prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein. After months of censoring and work, the DOJ has released 3.5 million of the 6 million confirmed pages of the Epstein files.
Many named in the files are under investigation or have stepped down from their positions from being in the files. Others are defending or explaining their relationship with Epstein. In most cases, being in the files has damaged their reputation.
“That’s why the American people want these files to be public, so we can hold these people that did partake in the sex trafficking to be held accountable,” teacher Joshua Fountain said.
Due to the release of these files, many people are already being punished for being in the files. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew, had his title taken away from him and was arrested for his connection to Epstein and accusations that he shared confidential information with Epstein. Lawrence Summers, former secretary of the treasury and teacher at Harvard; Thorbjorn Jagland, former prime minister of Norway; Thomas J. Pritzker, billionaire heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, and more have stepped down and are under investigation because of their connections to Epstein.
While some people are being punished, others are defending themselves. Trump has been named in the files but has responded that he cut off relations with Epstein. Elon Musk posted on “X” that he was invited to the island but refused after mentions of his names have been found in the files.
Even though many people are being punished for their involvement with Epstein, we must still know that being in the files doesn’t immediately mean they were involved. According to the Constitution, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
“Some of the names that are in the files are probably entirely innocent, and may have had no idea about Epstein’s transgressions. Just because your name pops in the files does not mean you are guilty of any wrongdoing.” teacher Stuart Chaffee said.
As people search to find information in the files, others are trying to capitalize on the release of millions of pages. Posts containing AI altered images of other people with Epstein have been popping up on the internet. An image of Oprah Winfrey vacationing with Epstein was posted on “X” and spread through social media. It was later found that the image was fake, altered from a different photo to include Winfrey.
From people stepping down, to others credibility being damaged, the impact of the files is undeniable. As more in the files are uncovered, more will be taken accountable for any actions they did. But when more information shows up, we must still figure out for ourselves if they actually were involved.
