Following the start of the new 2025-2026 school year, homecoming is always a well known festivity that kicks off the spirit for new opportunities and growth that will be endeavored throughout the school year.
This year, as always, the theme was voted by students in a poll-style form, but there was a rivalry between the two final themes for homecoming: “Rio” and “A night in Paris”.
As everyone knows, “A night in Paris” won by majority; however, much dispute about which theme was better continued to clash between students.
Many students opposed the theme and thought “Rio” would’ve been more fun, and were super confused how “A night in Paris” won if so many people disliked the theme.
Throughout October, random students from B Lunch were surveyed about their satisfaction with the “A night in Paris” theme. Out of the 22 students, a majority of 14 were not satisfied, and only eight people claimed to be happy with the theme.
Many students believed that the theme should’ve been more unique, and if not, they would have to make something about this homecoming very special, knowing that many other schools in the area had used this dance theme.
“I am not satisfied with ‘A night in Paris’,” senior Sophia Gutierrez Balderas said. She believed that the theme was “basic” and should’ve had more creativity. “And how do you dress for [the theme] to be honest?”
Rio received a lot of hype because it was a super unique and exciting theme. There could’ve been a lot of colorful ideas for decorating and dressing up according to the theme, which is important to a lot of people.
Senior London Burruel, is one of the students that voted for “Rio” over the winning theme. “I would’ve gone crazy for ‘Rio’. I would have had blue feathers and everything. I don’t know if people voted for logic… because [Paris] is kind of a cliche thing, I guess. A popular choice,” Burruel.
Some students even proposed that the idea of an Eiffel Tower made by the school body would make it more fun, one also noted that a backdrop inspired by Parisian streets on the walls would make this dance stand out better as well.
As many people opposed the homecoming theme, it still won the majority by statistic, and plenty of students thought it was a fun theme and that the decor at homecoming was very nice, one student changing their mind saying the theme was “a lot nicer than expected”.
Even though the theme was basic, the school still did a great job at decorating for the dance. Rio would have been preferred because of the childhood nostalgia and the fact that it doesn’t look like many other schools have done that. There could have been many different ways the school could have decorated it, and there would’ve been a lot more opportunity to dress for the theme as well.
The school broadened the Paris theme to incorporate as many close-winning themes as possible, including “under the stars” and floral “garden” elements as well, which made things a win-win for more of the voters.
