“Puffs”, categorized as a comedy, features Wayne Hopkins, a boy who attends a “certain school of magic” at the same time as a “certain boy wizard.”
“It’s very funny. Audiences are going to have a really, really good time watching this play. And you don’t have to go into it thinking it’s going to be something serious, and you have to pay attention. It’s going to be a good laugh, a good time,” senior Elias Hoggarth said.
“Puffs” brings a big emphasis on comedy, even integrating adult-like humor into the play. This is a huge change from the previous winter musical, “Mary Poppins”, which gained a lot of traction throughout the school. A lot of people, when faced with the challenge of something new, will back down or hesitate, but when the cast of “Puffs” faced this, they chose to embrace it.
”It’s something new. It’s a lot, a lot different than what ‘Mary Poppins’ was, and it’s a whole different vibe, and I’m excited to do something new,” Hoggarth said.
The Drama Club’s choice of play is “nothing like we’ve ever done before,” sophomore Cooper Hedglin said, “I think it’ll surprise audiences.”
Key themes of this play are friendship and loyalty. In drama, people spend hours on end working alongside fellow actors. Sometimes the rehearsals can be grueling, so what makes it all worth it?
“It means a lot to be able to do this with them, to share this experience with these people,” Hoggarth said.
“Puffs” relies heavily on audience engagement. It is intended to make you laugh and be a crowd-pleaser. Another thing that relies heavily on the audience is the actors. The actors bring the energy, but the audience retains it. When an actor walks on stage and sees an empty crowd, it can be disheartening. The cast and crew put in hours upon hours of hard work to please you, the audience member.
“When I see a full crowd of people, I’m like, this is who I have worked to please over the last couple months. They’re who I do it for,” Hoggarth said
Hedglin, who plays Cedric and Mr. Voldy, has one suggestion for anyone who plans to attend “Puffs”.
“You should probably watch a certain series of movies,” Hedglin said.
