The most popular sport in terms of turnout, track and field, hosts an annual meet where they compete against other teams from around the area. This year the Viking classic consisted of Lake Stevens, Bothell, Eastmont, Edmonds-Woodway, Lakeside, Mariner, Puyallup and Squalicum. It was a head-to-head competition between Lake Stevens and Eastmont, at least in the boy’s bracket.
Eastmont won the boy’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 3200m, 4x100m relay and pole vault events. Lake Stevens took the boys’ 1600m, 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 4x400m relay, high jump and long jump.
Senior David Brown led the charge in the Lake Stevens meet, as he won the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. Senior Steven Lee got 2nd in the 110m hurdles and 3rd in the 300m hurdles. Junior Easton Munger won the long jump and junior Teagan Lawson got first in high jump.
“My favorite thing about track would definitely be the family aspect, everybody on the team is a part of one big family” junior Cody Luangrath said.
Luangrath is a Junior who throws the shot put, he is also a two-sport athlete, playing defensive and offensive line for the LSHS football team.
“The team goal would definitely be improving as a whole then winning state,” Junior long jumper Trey Pester said.
The whole team has one goal in mind and that is to win the state title again, they won it in 2022, but most of the team that competes now was on the JV team at the time.
One of the standout seniors was Jesse Lewis. Lewis has won the state title two years in a row for the 4×4 relay. He is also a star football player, who led the Vikings to a state championship and made two touchdowns in the state title game.
The LSHS girls team won most girls events. Senior Jada Sarrys won the 100m and 200m dash events. Freshman Kaysa Banks won the 400m race, and LSHS won the 4×100 and 4x400m relays.Sarrys is one of the biggest standout athletes on the girl’s side. She has the school record for the fastest 400m dash with a time of 57.54.
The LSHS team will continue on the path of making the state tournament and try to win the state championship as they did in 2022. There is no shortage of heart and determination on this stacked roster.
