Finishing the season with a 13-9 record, the LSHS boys basketball team has secured a second place finish in Wesco, the program’s highest league finish since 2009, marking major improvement for the team.
“The season is going great. We just got 2nd in Wesco for the first time since 2009.” senior Daniel Ngezaho said.
The team had high hopes all season, with a goal of returning to the Tacoma Dome for the state championship, which would have taken place in early March.
“We just wanna make it. It would be the first time since 2010 and would be a good accomplishment for the whole team who have been working hard,” Ngezaho said.
The great season however was not without adversity, when the team lost their best defender Brian Tilghman to a knee injury that would keep him out all season.
“We lost our best defender, Brian Tilghman, he tore his ACL fully in the game against Glacier Peak. ” sophomore Arthur Hughes said.
Despite the injury and major loss to the team, they remained resilient all season long as post season stakes rose, focusing heavily and doing everything they could to make it to the state tournament.
“Glacier peak is our biggest rival right now, they’re the ones we really need to focus on.” Sophomore Spencer Sanders-Pugh said.
With the regular season now complete, Lake Stevens boys basketball finished off their season with a record of 13-9 and a historic second place Wesco finish.
While the Vikings fell short of their state aspirations, this group has etched their name into recent program history.
Though the recent boys basketball season did not end at the Tacoma Dome, it reestablished Lake Stevens as a contender, and laid the foundation for future teams to make a postseason run.
