LSHS students interested in debate and global politics now have a new opportunity with the launch of the Model United Nations Club, which meets after school on Fridays in NE122.
This club is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience discussing and debating international issues while building public speaking and leadership skills.
“I haven’t heard anything about it (Model UN Club), but it sounds like an interesting opportunity for students who are into politics and that kind of stuff,” sophomore Serhii Shcherbyna said.
Model United Nations, or Model UN, is a program that places students into the shoes of diplomatic figures representing member countries of the United Nations. Students research their particular country and issues such as human rights, peace, security, economic development and the environment.
Students then form their own positions and participate in Model UN conferences, where they give speeches, negotiate with other countries and try to resolve global issues.
“So you prepare your country’s interests, and then you make compromises with the others.” sophomore Carson Sobchuk said. “You basically are acting as the country’s ambassador.”
This club is a great opportunity for students to dip their toes into the complex world of global politics and develop communication skills to work with others on different issues as a team.
