Gift of giving warms people’s hearts this season

More families registered this year requires more students to participate in the Giving Tree

One of the three Giving Trees on campus sits in the cafeteria by the attendance office and is still in need of people purchasing presents. The Giving Tree ornament-tags go to 30 local families who need a little help this holiday season. “My opinion of the giving tree is that it’s a really good way to help the community in a way the doesn’t embarrass those that need it,” senior Jared Ramirez said.

The Giving Tree is a part of the holiday drive run by Key Club. The club sets up trees around the school with tags on them in place of ornaments. These tags have a gift request from a child in a family that are less privileged. Families from the community register for the program and make their wishes. Gifts should be returned to Molly Donnelly in Room 200.

“There, I think, are like 30 more families that need presents this year than last year so there are a lot more people around the school that are going to need to be involved in it,” senior Jared Ramirez said.

The Giving Tree provides a way for the families in need to find a way to get presents for their kids and maintain their anonymity. The “names” on the tags are just codes for the family that requested the gift. A specific controlled group in the Key Club will then cross reference the code with actual names when the present is handed to them. Then the present is sent off to the family.

“Buy a present. There are presents that will cost two dollars to fifty dollars. How ever much you want to give,” Ramirez said.

Playing Santa for those in need is a joyous feeling anyone will want to have. The gift of giving is what the Holidays are all about.
