Senior skip day is a well known tradition amongst the graduating class of each year. Seniors collectively decide a date on which they will all skip school, sometimes meeting together at a designated spot to participate in an activity.
However, this can only be possible if there is clear communication about the event coming from a source where everyone can find the same information.
So far this year, there has already been one misunderstanding on what day to skip. After the Veteran’s Day break, rumors broke out about an alleged “skip day”. Many students were posting about it on their social media and arguing whether or not it was an actual skip day. Some students skipped, and others went to school. It turned out that it wasn’t an “official” skip day, but there was no clear ruling stating so.
This has been an issue for previous Senior classes as well, and there hasn’t been a clear solution for organizing skip day yet.
Senior Kayson Ring, who participated in the recent skip day on Dec. 1 at Altitude, suggested an idea to make finding information on social media more accessible.
“On the Lake Stevens site, they should have a senior skip day portfolio or tab to click to get [more] information,” Ring added.
Ring admitted that he had trouble for a while finding clear information, and he ended up hearing about it on the Instagram Barstool account for LSHS a few days prior to the event. He believed the information provided was “not very clear”.
Senior Addisyn Blackburn also stated that the communication regarding the event wasn’t very clear, and not inclusively communicated between each senior.
Beyond the fact that it wasn’t communicated by the majority of seniors, she had an opinion that she didn’t get to express under the consideration of the event.
“I think that it’s too early in the year for one, but I’m not complaining,” Blackburn said.
In order for the next series of Senior skip days to be more well-known and convenient, someone needs to step up and designate solutions for the problems that happened for the first event.
One start could be making a specific “skip day” account on Instagram, where people can easily check for direct information and updates. This would allow people to also DM the account managers with ideas and suggestions, where people can feel like their opinions are considered. However this is only one idea, and there’s many things the Senior Class of 2026 could come up with to fix the issue.
Moving forward, senior skip day organisation needs to be more clear, easier to find and more inclusive when it comes to planning.
