Many students in our school celebrate the holiday of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month of fasting in the Islamic religion in order to celebrate the holy month in the Muslim calendar. Students participating in Ramadan fasted from sunrise to sunset March 10 to April 9. To commemorate and celebrate this month by giving back, the Islamic Student Union (ISU) has conducted a food drive.
While the food drive is not specifically connected to Ramadan it is being run by the Islamic Student Union at LSHS in order to give back to the Lake Stevens Food Bank.
“It’s true that the food drive is happening during the month of Ramadan, so for our Muslim students this work is significant to them since it is a time to focus on charity and serving one’s community–not unlike the giving tree or the food drive we organize between Thanksgiving and Winter Break,” Islamic Student Union advisor and English teacher, Kati Tilley said.
Food drives benefit the larger community.
“We’re providing food for people that are in need,” said junior Abdelraouf Attia who is a Leadership Student and member of Ramadan Food Drive committee.
Food drives allow people in the community who are not able to get food themselves to have food. If possible the community should try to give back to our community and donate.
“We’ve currently collected about 300 cans of non-perishable food. We’re hoping this last week we can get more–it really is going to a great cause,” Tilley said.
ISU asked students to bring in food to their first period classes. All the food was given to The Lake Stevens Food Bank where it will have a positive impact on the people around Lake Stevens and students at LSHS. ISU and Leadership sponsored this food drive to help the community.
