To the Lake Stevens Vikings,
I know that “March Madness” typically refers to the tournament of men’s college basketball that happens every year, but I think it applies to my whole month in general (if that wasn’t obvious by this coming out halfway through April). For not having any scheduled days off, March went by incredibly fast, with plenty of action shoved into the month.
In April, we had spring break, making the month feel even shorter. May brings us three flex Fridays and Memorial Day off near the end of the month, so it will surely fly by too. Lastly, June presents the long awaited (or dreaded) graduation for seniors and summer break for the rest of us. So when you really think about it, we’re almost done.
But in reality, the end of school is still a long way away. For now, I give you a recap of the month from my point of view: March greeted me with a week-long project in my Personal Finance class and tests in three of my other classes.
At the school board meeting on March 11, I was recognized as a Student of the Month for February, and gave a short speech. The other honored students were Seniors Maddox Arellano and Trevin Walker, Junior Laila Njie, and Sophomores Lenaya Frazier and Ryan Campbell.
Both FCCLA and HOSA had State Leadership Conferences this month. FCCLA students earned seven gold medals, 11 silver medals, and five students have qualified for Nationals at Washington D.C. in July. In HOSA, seven students reached top 10 in Washington and three more students broke into the top five.
On “Friday the 13th,” we had snow piling up in the morning, but not enough to cancel school. Considering the day, it’s fitting that our luck didn’t pan out. A little over a week later on March 23, a malfunctioning belt in the HVAC system caused the fire alarm to go off and us to evacuate in the middle of the afternoon. While I’m sure it was stressful for our administrative staff, I quite enjoyed the time in the sun with my friends.
Spring sports, like track and field, baseball, softball, and tennis, are starting, and throughout the month, the cheer team has been working on finding their stars for next year.
On March 25, LSHS’s Concert Choir took a field trip to the Everett Civic Auditorium for the Mount Pilchuck Musical Education Association festival. We sang for three adjudicators and received feedback on our performance live on stage, in front of an audience. Five days later on March 30, LSHS’s Concert and Wave Vocal Jazz Choirs took the stage for a concert, joined by Calelero’s Treble, Vocal Ensemble, and Jazz choirs.
Through it all, I was recovering from tearing a ligament in my toe by dropping my phone on it.
Let me be clear, I didn’t write this just to rant about my month. While the gloomy rain and wind may still be common, putting a damper on our feelings and getting us down, we also have to remember that life is full of exciting things, both big and small.
As we trudge through the seemingly endless time of the school year that is spring, don’t forget about the longer, sunnier, and hopefully more stress-free days that lie ahead of us— after all, they may be closer than you think.
