On Nov. 10, Lake Stevens High School’s girl’s swim team attended the state swim meet in Federal Way for the 200 Medley relay. Juniors Jessica Garingo, Gracie Young, sophomore Addison Bowen, freshman Gwen Werner and senior Charlotte Lamb finished sixth in their heat and were out-touched by Glacier Peak High School. Their time of 2:01.27 was not fast enough for them to qualify for finals.
Lamb has been on a swim team since she was six years old. She typically competes in breaststroke but occasionally subs in for events that don’t have enough people. Although Lamb has been dedicated to the sport for over a decade, she plans to leave her competition years in high school.
“This year I focused less on the competition and more on having fun with freshmen,” Lamb said.
She spent a lot of time swimming with the freshman who had skills equivalent to her own because she enjoyed the community.
“In high school swimming, it’s really just about meeting new people and interacting with different schools, and you can make friends with people from different schools, and it’s very cool,” Lamb said.
Bowen had similar experiences this year, as the highlight of this season was the friends she made along the way.
Assistant Coach Felicity Speirs is proud of the team’s accomplishments.
“We, unfortunately, got out-touched by Glacier Peak, but honestly they worked really hard to get there and they swam great. They left it all in the pool,” Speirs said.
Lamb, Bowen and Speirs all claim staying calm and collected before a race is the best way to prepare, and in the end, all that matters is they did their best. Lake Stevens High School has yet another positive team that supports one another through throughout the season.
