Assigned seating while in high school has been a topic of discussion floating around LSHS. This practice could be seen as child-like treatment given that students are growing up and have more respect and are more attentive than they were in middle or elementary school.
“[Assigned seating is] unnecessary, and we are so old now and are going to have respect for the teachers by now ….I just feel like it’s kind of pointless.” senior Alexis Bailey said.
The idea of the one-size-fits-all all model is another issue that ties into the point that assigned seating shouldn’t still be mandatory in high school. This is because if one student is constantly being disruptive towards the entire class, why should everyone be penalized for it?
“If I see that there are disruptive students, I tend to make a new seating arrangement and separate the disruptive ones and try to put friends next to friends,” CTE teacher Kendra Peterson said.
Making accommodations for the students who aren’t being disruptive could be a better solution. Going into adulthood, students tend to have a little push-back on some of the guidelines put in place at school.
Although, many teachers think that assigned seating helps control the classroom and keeps disruptions to a minimum, says Debate: Should Students Have Assigned Seats?
“It really depends on the class I am with. Some classes are more chaotic than others,” Peterson stated.
“At this point, we are more mature and know how to act in front of teachers and in more professional environments, especially because a lot of us have jobs at this point and have these things that teach us responsibility and accountability,” senior Briana Busse said.
Some could say seating charts are a little contradicting since we are being told where to sit while we are hearing we are becoming adults.
Ravenna Dallas, a junior at LSHS finds the rule not so bothersome.
“I don’t really mind it because it helps me meet and talk to new people I would have never thought to speak to without it,” Dallas said.
She also believes that it helps her do better on tests and to get classwork done.
Why I Embrace Seating Charts in High School thinks that seating charts help teachers gain more control of their classes or specific students who have a hard time following directions or who struggle with causing disruptions.
Seating charts allow teachers to strategically place students based on their learning needs or pair those who may need extra help with stronger peers, encourages students to interact with classmates they might not normally choose to sit with, and promotes new friendships and reducing cliques.
Although there are some positive aspects of having assigned seating while in highschool, there is still a common dislike for them amongst the students because they think that they should be trusted enough and have enough maturity to be able to pick where they sit and be moved if needed instead of having assigned seats in the first place.
