We all know the feeling of finishing work ahead of schedule, and wanting a 20-minute break to recharge with a fun game on a Chromebook.
Unfortunately, Lake Stevens High School blocks game sites on student Chromebooks.
School-provided Chromebooks come with restrictions on what students can access. These restrictions range from sources of false information to sketchy websites to preventing the play of games.
“I like to run Coolmath games after my work. It would help me feel more recharged for my next class,” senior Thaddeus Bradley said.
Understandably, students who stay on-task and finish work early feel they are being negatively affected by the blocking of game sites.
Video games can contribute positively to the emotional and psychological well-being of children. Since school work and tasks can increase stress in students, being able to play games and have a breather will improve students’ mental health.
Schools believe blocking game sites keep students on-task and reduce the chance of distraction for students. However, blocking these sites removes a harmless outlet that grants students the ability to unwind and relax, which is crucial to keeping students on task.
Juniors Jameson Bradford and Makenna Lovinus feel like they are good students who complete their work and simply want to be able to enjoy a game after doing so.
Removing the ability to play games on Chromebooks gets rid of a valuable way for kids to take a break and have a better focus rate in classrooms. LSHS should provide the opportunity for students to independently manage their time.
