Lake Stevens High School has updated their club list to add a new sports club. This club will be based around Pickleball for students who enjoyed it in gym class. The club is run by students who find the sport easy-going.
LSHS encourages students to sign up for clubs year-round, whether they are related to sports, academics, or entertainment. Recently, a new sports club was added, specifically for pickleball.
Pickleball, which originated on Bainbridge Island, is a 2-4 player sport revolving around hitting a plastic wiffle ball with paddles. Pickleball is compared to the two popular sports, tennis and ping pong. It is played on a court similar to tennis but with paddles similar to the ones used in ping pong. The objective of pickleball is to gain 11 points with a 2-point lead to win the game.
Currently, the Pickleball Club isn’t fully funded by the ASB for equipment which has caused delays in the first meeting of the club. ASB is still working on buying and transferring the equipment to the aux gym for the club to start hosting meetings.
Junior Ana Joehnk runs Pickleball Club, and the advisor is Aja Valm.
Pickleball is a popular sport played in P.E. classes at LSHS, which inspired Joehnk to start the club for people of all ability levels.
“I picked up pickleball with my friends last year…I’m not athletic but this is a sport that’s really easy to pick up and play,” Joehnk said.
When the Pickleball Club is finally funded, it will be found in the Aux. Gym during the colder and more rainy months of the year, after school on Fridays, 1:30 – 3 p.m. It could also possibly be found outside on the tennis courts during the sunnier months of the year. Students can come and go as they please. Updates for the club can be found on their Instagram account, @LSHS_pickleballers.
