On March 9, 2025, Daylight Savings Time began and won’t end until November 3, 2025. Moving clocks forward one hour results in more sunlight and later sunsets.
A 2020 study from Current Biology explains that poor sleep after daylight savings contributes to existing problems like depression, anxiety and Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).
A Harvard University study predicts the change of spring may explain the 6% rise in car accidents,
SLEEP
Many people find that they experience sleep deprivation and mood changes in the first few weeks of Daylight Savings Time.
“Daylight savings has messed up my sleep schedule. I’ve been staying up later and feeling more tired in the mornings, which makes it harder to stay focused during the day,” sophomore Lily Dodge said.
Outside of the high school, there have been reports nationwide that describe hardships people experience during the first few weeks of spring forward.
“Yes, It has negatively affected my sleep schedule because sometimes I don’t realise how late it is,” junior Enrique Telles said.
SEASONAL DEPRESSION
For individuals with pre-existing S.A.D. or depression, springing forward can trigger an episode of depression or anxiety when it’s too bright.
“My seasonal depression is worse during lighter times, which makes me tend to isolate myself worse and worse,” senior Katherine Holcomb said.
Some individuals with S.A.D. are triggered when it’s too dark outside.
“Yes, for sure, I experience deep sadness when it’s dark out in the day but when it’s dark at night,” junior Jessica Sood said. “My mood throughout the day is very depressing, and I even feel annoyed at that time. I don’t talk much with anyone.”
