Lake Stevens High School focuses on maintaining a high level of opportunities in each of the 4 A’s: academics, athletics, arts and activities. At the high school, students involve themselves in art classes, allowing them to showcase their talents and express themselves through music, theatre and drawing.
Junior Taylor Bailey, a student taking a theatre class at LSHS, discusses the number of options available.
“There’s so many different options, you can draw, you can do theatre, you can even do video and photography,” Bailey said.
Having various class options means students aren’t confined to one type of artistic expression. Due to the high level of interest in the art department, LSHS has increased the opportunities for students looking for art classes beyond the required courses.
Students involved in art classes at LSHS give them a place to take a break from stressful classes and express themselves in a way that other classes may not.
“It gives me a space where I can show my artistic abilities and express myself,” Bailey said.
Having an outlet at school, one that increases self-esteem and self-expression, is vital for the students at LSHS.
“Art is a way to express my emotions. I like creating beautiful things,” senior Sasha Atwood said.
Band, choir and guitar are highly popular music classes where students use instruments, as well as their voices, to express themselves in a special way.
Micah Palmer has been in the LSHS guitar class for a year and enjoys growing in his abilities to read music, strum guitar chords and sing new songs.
“Every time you play a song on the guitar, it’s going to be unique,” senior Micah Palmer said.
Students having ample opportunities to refine their artistic abilities, whether it’s as an actor, artist or instrument player, is a huge step in the right direction for students to express themselves at school freely.
