Natural High Network inspires positive change
Empowered students choose natural highs over substances
Lake Stevens High School’s Natural High Network is a student-led group that steers away from substance use and celebrates the ‘natural highs’ of hobbies, talents and personal connections.
“It’s a club that promotes creative expression and anything that makes you happy, without drugs or alcohol,” senior Thomas Contreras, a member of the club, said.

Steve Pitkin, brought the Natural High Network (NHN) to Lake Stevens High School back in 2002 when he first joined the LSHS staff. Ever since, he has been the driving force behind this club.
“Our purpose is to have a good time, accept each other and live drug-free. Music is a way for people to connect, feel better and express themselves” Pitkin said.
One of their visible events is the NHN’s monthly Friday open mics. On the last Friday of each month, anyone can perform—whether it’s singing solo, duets, trios or playing an instrument—at the west end of the cafeteria during both lunch periods.

Serena Caine, the president of the Natural High Network, plays a key role in energizing the club and organizes fun events and inspires others to embrace Natural Highs.

“Our goal is just to have fun. You don’t need to be a great singer or musician; the point is to enjoy yourself. We want to promote natural highs rather than drugs and alcohol,” Caine said.
NHN has hosted some events off campus and is planning to do so again. Take last year’s open mic at North Cove, for example—high school students and locals came together to enjoy performances from anyone brave enough to take the stage.
Ultimately, the Natural High Network provides a space for students to experience joy and build meaningful connections through friendships, hobbies, and skills. By opening the door to natural highs, they help students close the door on unhealthy choices.
