Senior Rose Blume has returned to the Valhalla staff this year to be the Sports Editor. Resulting in part from the passion which lies within her to write and to create artwork, Blume has indisputably decided she would like to be involved in Lake Stevens High School during her senior year through Journalism. During the school day, Blume greatly enjoys her French class, while outside of school, she gets a kick out of longboarding, letting her creativity flow through different forms of art, and reading. Upon completion of high school, Blume plans on living in France for some time and returning back home to Washington to open an art gallery.

Around 683 students will arrive next year being the largest class LSHS has seen. The graduating class of 2019 has caused much excitement, but also has made some anxious. “[The next class being the largest] is exciting. It’s a compliment to our school that people want to come and live in the community and be here. The other side of it is, it’s daunting; it’s a lot of kids,” Cahan said.

ORCA’s teachers care about the research that students conduct, making sure they do their best to help as much as possible and try to incorporate the local environment into all aspects of the curriculum. Both teachers and students that seniors Kayla Owens, Michael Finley, Acacia Quidort and Victoria Beavers have encountered in ORCA have helped their learning experience in the scientific field. “I will definitely keep in touch with everyone I’ve met through ORCA. Even now as people are making college decisions we are finding ways to stay in touch for next year,” Quidort said.

We’ll be seeking input from all students and working with leadership to regularly communicate about our progress,” Stanton said.

Nightlock slides easily into a slot on the bottom of a door and into a hole in the ground to barricade the door. The device was chosen for its strong role in the A.L.I.C.E program. “You couldn’t open the door if you wanted to,” Principal Eric Cahan said.

After six months of waiting for spring sports to start, students put in the effort to show off their talent and be placed in the sport of their liking. The coaches have started to set their goals for this year’s group of athletes that are lucky to be on their roster. “We will have some experienced players with a history of success in our top three varsity positions, but we will be relatively inexperienced at the other three spots and will rely upon a group of girls who have only been on the team for a year,” Coach Larry Palmer said.

Senior Gino Loera stands ready against his opponent. As a team the wrestlers have struggled in dual meets, but are focused to be prepared for State. “The coaches and everything will really build you up as a wrestler...But the coaches can't do it all. It really takes all the kids on the team to go out of their way and bring new kids in and actually support each other,” senior Jake Douglas said.

One of the three Giving Trees on campus sits in the cafeteria by the attendance office and is still in need of people purchasing presents. The Giving Tree ornament-tags go to 30 local families who need a little help this holiday season. “My opinion of the giving tree is that it’s a really good way to help the community in a way the doesn’t embarrass those that need it,” senior Jared Ramirez said.

LSHS is hosting a cash over cans food drive from December 1 through the 17. The food drive will benefit the Lake Stevens Food Bank and the Little Hungry Hearts Foundation. “This year instead of collecting cans, we are collecting cash because little hungry hearts and the food bank has requested for us to collect cash donations instead of cans,” says Senior Emily Stockdale.
