Oct. 9 marked Senior Night for the Lake Stevens girl’s varsity soccer team.
This was the last regular season game of the year, so seniors were in charge of making the team’s lineup.
It was an emotional night, as many of these girls had been playing together for countless years. Before the game, players gathered on the field with their friends and family. The announcer then read the seniors’ speeches that they had prepared for their friends and family.
“I’m getting to play with all my senior friends, and also getting to have them read my speech aloud and getting flowers and having all my family and friends be there was fun,” senior Finley Messer said.
Although many of the girls struggled to hold back tears during the speeches, they would soon show that they were no “softies”.
Lake Stevens hosted Mariner High School, which gave the Vikings the home-field advantage. Wasting absolutely no time, Lake Stevens put on a clinic against Mariner with a quick lead in the first half. Some key impactful players were seniors Maya Courtenay and Zoe Hopkins, both putting up strong performances against Mariner.
Coming into the second half, Lake Stevens had the advantage leading 5 – 0. Refusing to slow down Lake Stevens was able to run up the score to a whopping eight points, with the final score of 8 – 0 for a Lake Stevens victory.
Although the girls have the chance to play for a while longer in the WESCO tournament, Senior Night can be seen as a turning point for the season coming to an end.
