Girls wrestling started Nov. 18, and athletes were ready to get to work. The girls are committed to setting high expectations and making this a memorable season.
Many of the girls prepared in the off-season. Lake Stevens High School held practices for their club team and some athletes did their own preparation, like other club teams and national teams. Their off-season work prepares them for the tough competition and builds confidence.
The team has high hopes for a successful season, fueled by both individual and team goals. Many of the girls have set their sights on making it to state, with hopes of placing among the top competitors. One standout returner, junior Kamryn Mason, who finished second at state last year, is determined to reach new heights with a first-place finish this season.
“I wrestled the entire summer like I didn’t have any free time in the summer. I was always wrestling,” Mason said.
16 freshmen turned out, which will add a new mix of girls to the team.
“I think I am most excited to compete again and see all the upcoming freshmen and see how they do on an actual high school team,” senior Lexi Oliver said.
Although they enjoy the sport because they like to wrestle and be around each other everyday, that isn’t the only reason why they wrestle.
“My favorite part of the sport is probably having something to do every day consistently and working out. I really like working out. Practice is my favorite,” senior Alex Harris said.
Along with being a competitive environment, the girls also enjoy being able to use their energy on the mat.
“I think my favorite part is being able to take out like all my energy and just everything out on the mat and not get in trouble for it,” Oliver said.
As their first meet approaches on Dec. 5 at Archbishop Murphy, the team has practice twice a day in preparation for a strong start to the season.
