Lake Stevens High School’s track team is known statewide as a strong competitor as they send multiple athletes to compete in state every year. March 20, 2025 marked the first meet of the season.
Athletes are trying to beat their marks from last year and figure out where they stand this year with times, heights and distances so they can set goals for the year. That made this meet a pretty important meet.
“While it’s still just the first meet of the season you should be pushing yourself when it’s time to compete, but when you aren’t preparing to compete it’s nice to have fun and chat with athletes from the opposing school,” sophomore Whitney Bird said.
Jumps
Athletes who stood out on Thursday in pole vault, long/triple jump and high jump competed last year. The top athlete in the high jump was sophomore Whitney Bird who improved by a total of two inches compared to last year’s first meet. Last year she jumped a height of 4’ 8” and improved to a height of 4’ 10” this year.
In the boys high jump, the top athlete was senior Teagan Lawson who improved by four inches compared to this time last year. Last year, he jumped 6’ 2” and improved his first meet jump to 6’ 6”.
Sprints
Sophomore Noelani Tupua and junior Gabriel Allinson showed significant improvement in their sprinting performances this season compared to last. Tupua, competing in the 100m hurdles, cut her time of 21.05 seconds from 2024 to an 16.16 seconds in 2025, demonstrating remarkable growth and dedication.
Allinson, who competed in the 110m hurdles, also made a notable leap, cutting his time of 17.46 seconds the season prior to 15.62 seconds in the 2025 season opener.
Throwing
Senior Haylie Thomas showcased progress in javelin, significantly improving her throw from 64’ 10” in 2024 to 80’ 2” in 2025. Her ability to add nearly 16 feet to her mark highlights her strength and refinement in technique.
Fellow senior Owen McGourty displayed growth in shot put, increasing his throw from 42’ 5.5” last season to a distance of 51’ 8” in 2025, demonstrating both power and skill in his ability to compete.
Distance
Freshman Dorcas Atieno made her presence immediately known by crushing the competition in the 3200m and getting first place with a time of 12:58.08. Her performance got her name out there and established her as a promising young competitor in distance events.
Senior Owen Stults also showed improvement in the 800m, cutting his time by roughly 13 seconds with a previous time of 2:15.71 in 2024 to 2:02.05 in 2025, reflecting his dedication and endurance gains over the past year.
