Boys wrestling started on Nov. 18. 107 students signed up to practice. Wrestlers will practice twice a day until Thanksgiving break to prepare for the Sidney Eagle Invitational.
“Montana is always a good state that produces a lot of good wrestlers. So for the past two years that I’ve gone, it’s been pretty competitive,” senior Samuel Irizarry said.
First-string varsity traveled to Sidney, MT to compete against the region’s toughest wrestlers in a 3-day tournament.
The top wrestlers in the tournament were junior Kamryn Mason, sophomore Kylee Wicklund, and sophomore Mikey Lawrence who all placed first in their weight classes. Junior Oliver Paisley placed fifth, junior Alessandro Rush placed sixth, senior Asher Heist placed sixth, senior Devyn Zurel placed sixth, junior Nacho Arellano placed eighth and senior Dino Dimarco III placed eighth.
“After the duels, you wrestle your first match and then you´ll weigh in and wrestle the second day if you make it,” senior Jacob Hurley said.
With wrestling being such an intense combat sport, a tournament this long can be taxing.
If students are still interested and want to wrestle, it’s not too late to sign up. Talk to coaches Derek Lopez and Andy Knutson for more information.
“A lot of trips were a lot of fun because you get to socialize with all your close friends that you’re in the lineup with,” Irizarry said.
Later in the season, the team will host two home meets against Kamiak and Mariner High School. School support at these meets means a lot to the team.
“Please show up. We love the support,” Irizarry said.
