Baseball season begins
The 2023 baseball team works hard to make it the best season yet.

Lake Stevens High School baseball season started the last week of February.
Junior Haydan Villasenor is one of the 16 who plays for the varsity baseball team.
“This team is the most exciting team I’ve ever played on…. lots of talent, and we all work super well together. Lake Stevens baseball is something to watch out for,” Villasenor said.
Baseball has about two games per week. The Vikings’ current standings are 6-4 as of April 12. The team has not played any league games yet. Villasenor explained the team has been working hard since Thanksgiving in and out of the weight room.
“The season going great, we’ve had some big wins and a couple of really close games. We have lots of stud players who are going to play at the next level and who want to make an impact on Lake Stevens baseball,” Villasenor said.
Josh White coaches the Lake Stevens Vikings baseball team.
“Coaching this particular team has been very rewarding. It is a special group, especially the seniors, because a lot of them have started since they were sophomores, and have developed good relationships,” White said.
White explained that the baseball team this year has many seniors who are moving on to college ball next year. He stated that the coaching staff wants to do their part to prepare them for the competition at that level. Wyatt Queen is currently a senior who will be playing college baseball at EVCC.
“Leaving the high school team is kind of bittersweet. Moving on and playing is fun but it’s also sad because I’m leaving some of the guys that I’ve played with for the last three to four years that will always be family to me,” Queen said.
Like every team, goals and success always comes with challenges.
“As a team, I think the biggest problem is getting down on ourselves and not performing to our best potential,” Villaseñor said.
Baseball isn’t as popular as other LSHS sports. The student turnout at games is very little. The team expressed having a greater turnout would affect how they play. With a bigger crowd, the energy would be better and help the team’s performance as well as make them happy to see more people come out and support the team.
All in all, baseball is off to a great start so far. Baseball season will continue into April when the league games begin.
