Slammers program opens doors to youth wrestling
The Slammers program offered by Lake Stevens Wrestling Club offers second to fifth grade children a fun and supportive way to learn wrestling.
To most, wrestling seems like a tough and intimidating sport to get into. For kids in Lake Stevens, getting started is easy.
The Lake Stevens Slammers program welcomes second to fifth grade students of all experience levels, which makes Slammers a place to grow as an athlete.
Participants get to enjoy the benefits of a fun team sport, with two one-hour long practices a week and fun competitions on the weekends. It’s not about winning, it’s about building lifelong connections and skills.
Slammers is coached by members of the high school wrestling team at LSHS.
“It teaches children how to move their bodies in a way they won’t get hurt, and it teaches them coordination. It’s beneficial to them to start sports earlier in their life,“ junior wrestler Jameson Bradford said.

Beyond physical fitness, being involved with Slammers helps children develop mental toughness, learn how to set goals, overcome challenges and support their teammates in pursuit of improvement.
“I think the Lake Stevens wrestling community is very welcoming, and teaches you how to be a good person, but it goes beyond wrestling. A big emphasis is put on grades and being a good person, and the same emphasis is put on the kids who come to Slammers,“ Bradford said
Slammers offers kids a mix of a strong community, physical development and the opportunity to grow into responsible adults that all children can benefit from if involved.
“Wrestling from a young age grew my love for the sport. It drove my work ethic and dedication. It really raises kids in a way that turns them into hardworking and respectful adults,” senior Sam Irizary said.
Whether a child wants to try out their first sport, or try a new sport, Slammers offers kids a place to start their wrestling journey and learn lifelong skills.
