But what exactly is Record Store Day, and why does it exist?
It was first conceived at an independent record store during a brainstorming session in Baltimore, MD and then soon founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Brian Poehner and Don Van Cleave. It was created with the purpose of celebrating the culture of the independently owned record stores.
The celebration started humbly with a launch by Metallica at a music store called Rasputin Music in Mountain View, CA on April 19, 2008. The first celebration featured around 10 special releases from multiple artists like Vampire Weekend, Death Cab for Cutie, R.E.M. and some more.
The celebration had approximately 300 independent record stores in the U.S. participating. But the celebration’s popularity quickly grew over the years, and it is now celebrated in multiple countries and has gone from getting 10 exclusive releases to 339 exclusive releases in the US alone, as well as more stores participating than ever.
The closest independent stores participating are in Snohomish and Everett. Check out the list of participating stores in Washington state.
It is also being recognized as an official holiday in many big cities around the U.S. such as New York, Los Angeles, Boise, Las Vegas and many more.
So, for those who enjoy a more traditional and physical way to indulge into their music and would also like to support local independent stores, take full advantage of upcoming discounts and new releases this April.
