The ancient art of horoscopes
A deep dive to the history of astrology and differing beliefs around the topic.
Astrology has been around for 2,400 years, and people still use it in their daily lives by looking at their horoscopes or how the stars are aligned on their birthday or any other celebrations. Astrology is generally defined as the ‘belief’ that astronomical phenomena have the power to affect our personality traits and influence the daily events in our lives.
The astrologers also identified the central proposition of natal astrology to be tested. The results were published in Nature on Dec. 5, 1985. The study found that astrologers were unable to match natal charts to their corresponding personality tests better than chance. The astrologers were no more likely to be correct even when they had high confidence that they had made a correct match. Carlos stated that the results “clearly refutes the astrological hypothesis.”
Scientific testing has found no evidence to support the premises or purported effects outlined in astrological traditions. Although astrology is false, people still seem to be interested in astrology and still take information that has been provided through apps/websites for their weekly readings.
“l typically do readings whether on an app or online weekly, just to see what to prepare for,” junior Kailee Strom said.
Students tend to feel that their horoscope can correlate to most of those characteristics that were given for that horoscope but sometimes can be at false.
“I’m a Virgo, and my book that I have for horoscope signs says that Virgos can tend to be stubborn and that they need to have or know the plan for the day or event, but then it also says that Virgos are very organized, but I am nowhere close organized!” senior Araya Clements said.
Individuals tend to use astrology as a “routine” in their lives by looking at their daily horoscope report because it can make them feel ready for their day with the wise information that was given to the individuals horoscope and they can tend to feel more positive with themselves for the start of their day.
“I like to use astrology as a confidence booster sometimes because I really feel and astrology makes me feel like everything happens for a reason, and when I am feeling very down about everything, astrology tends to reassure me about my problems and decisions I have made or that was made for me that it was meant to happen for me, so I can learn and grow from life problems,” senior Amber Lanier said.
Even though it has been scientifically proven that it is false and horoscopes don’t tend to linked up to some people, individuals believe that life can’t be defined all by scientific matters and that there may be still more information about astrology that we don’t even know.
“I don’t think it can be by scientific matters, science isn’t all there is to it. The universe is HUGE and so much of it makes things how they are,” sophomore Katherine Iwanaga said.
It is based strictly on the position and movement of the sun or other planets at the time you were born. In ancient times, astrology was inseparable from society where it originated in Babylon, and the Babylonians developed their own form of horoscopes around 2,400 years ago.
Then around 2,100 years ago, astrology spread to the easten Mediterranean, where it became more popular and spread to Egypt and India, which at the time was under control of a dynasty of Greek kings. Astrology was used for self use, they predicted the future for individuals, groups or even nations. It was to inform the individual of the course of their life on the positions of the planets and of the zodiac signs.
The Babylonians would forecast their future circumstances by observing space through time and relating ominous events, such as a lunar eclipse, to social, political, and environmental problems in aspects of their everyday lives, such as giving birth to deformed children.
Although, due to the weak evidence that astrology is ‘real’, it has been rejected by the scientific community. The most famous test was done by Shawn Carlson, who graduated from UCLA with a master’s degree in Physics in 1983, and with a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics in 1989. While Carlson was an undergraduate, in 1985 Calrson carried out a double-blind test of astrologer’s abilities to extract information about their clients from the apparent positions of celestial objects as seen from the places and times of the clients’ births.
Carlson’s experiment involved twenty-eight astrologers who agreed to match over 100 natal charts to psychological profiles that were generated by the CPI, a standard accepted personality test. The participating astrologers were nominated by the National Council for Geocosmic Research, which acted as the astrological advisors to ensure that the test was fair.
Although astrology isn’t scientific, Individuals have used astrology for a type of reassurance for themselves about our good traits and characteristics and what you can be good at! With my sign, I feel like my whole self doesn’t line up to my horoscope, but it never hurts to have fun looking at things that were made “for you”.
Astrology can be fun and it can bring enjoyment looking at your traits and characteristics and even others! Another great way to learn more about astrology and maybe about yourself is using tarot cards. Tarot cards can help with looking out for your future and even upcoming events and how they are going to help you or what that event will bring to you!
