Since its release in 2017, “Fortnite” has arguably been the most popular game found online. “Fortnite” is a battle royale video game, where 100 players compete on an island to eliminate each other and be the last one standing.
“Fortnite” has evolved over the years, introducing new mechanics, guns, skins and maps every season. But once a year, it returns to its roots for a Fortnite ‘OG’ season.
“Fortnite OG” season is when the game returns to its original state. All the original guns are back, the new movement mechanics are removed and the original map replaces the newer one.
This season brings a wave of nostalgia for many and brings back many old players who would otherwise not play.
“It’s better than normal ‘Fortnite’, I like to play the old map again, and I only play when the OG season is back,” senior Thad Bradley said.
The ‘map’ refers to the location where the contestants compete for the victory royale, which changes in appearance every new season. In some seasons, it is covered in large cities, or a snowy winter wonderland, while in others it is completely flooded with the ocean.
This constant change in Fortnite’s battleground creates an added layer of nostalgia for the original map.
Many former players criticize “Fortnite” for being lame in its more recent years, only appealing to a new generation. Still, “Fortnite” has been a way for players to connect with friends they would not otherwise have been able to hang out with.
“I play Fortnite with friends who live out of town, that’s what makes it fun for me,” Bradley said.
“Fortnite OG” season will officially end on Jan. 31 at 11:59 p.m., so take advantage of the opportunity to relive some nostalgia soon!
