Baldur’s Gate 3 took home the big prize at the 2023 Game of the Year event held on Dec. 7, 2023 at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. A massive 118 million people gathered across multiple platforms and networks worldwide. Nominees were announced on Nov. 13, and voting ended on Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m. PT.
The prize of Game of the Year went to Baldur’s Gate 3, a role-playing video game developed and published by a Belgian game developer, Larian Studios. The game is the third main installment in the Baldur’s Gate series, based on the tabletop fantasy role-playing system of Dungeons & Dragons.
The Video Game Club has their own opinion on this winner. Some were ecstatic about the result, whereas others, not so much.
Junior William Mapp watched the awards, and although he would have preferred Alan Wake to win, he wasn’t against the result. He thinks it is “what most triple A games should be.”
Mapp believes that Alan Wake should have won because it’s “basically that creator’s dream game.”
In terms of the event Mapp thinks there are some things that could have been done better. He says that “it was very nice,” but the previous year, there had been an incident with people running up on stage. Luckily they didn’t have this problem. Mapp felt they rushed the developers’ speeches by letting them talk for 30 seconds and then started music in the background to cut off the speech.
Hopefully next year, they take audience feedback into consideration to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. With 31 different categories, there is a high chance for games to win different prizes, but the main prize, Game of the Year, can only go to one. Winners of various categories can be found here.
