Horns up! The Lake Stevens volleyball team celebrates after a 3-0 sweep against Ferndale High School. The Vikings clinched their eighth Wesco title in a row after winning against Glacier Peak High School.

The Lake Stevens girls volleyball team spiked their way through the competition this season. As the postseason nears, the question arises of whether the Viks will live up to the success and take home the state title. The Vikings have had an outstanding season up to this point while remaining undefeated through four games in district matchups.

But this isn’t new for the program since Coach Kyle Hoglund has taken this team to the playoffs five out of five years in his role as head coach at Lake Stevens. Lake Stevens strives to find itself in the WIAA State Tournament this season, hoping to be on the winning side of things this time around. Last year the Vikings fell short to Tahoma in the championship round, with a score of 3-1.

Vikings senior leader Hayli Tri, spoke shared that the girls could turn the tide this postseason and arise victoriously.

“We need to do a better job at coming together and supporting one another this time around,”  Tri said.

The girls have come together this year and have built connections with one another that transfer to chemistry on the court. The Vikings’ recent trip to San Diego for a tournament helped with that.

Tri also showed trust in her younger teammates because she feels they will carry on the winning tradition of this program. Tri exclaimed that the younger generation “are all fighters” and she feels “super lucky that they are already so mature and hard-working”.

Not only do the veterans have faith in their younger group, but also the newcomers themselves have shown confidence in their ability to thrive in years to come. Junior Katelyn Eichert feels pressure from the older generation to succeed, but she is willing to take on the challenge. The Vikings’ future appears to be in good hands, excluding the seniors, this year’s varsity roster has three juniors, one sophomore, and three freshmen.

Regardless of the post-season success, the Vikings will have, these groups of girls have plenty to be proud of. With three seniors committed to play volleyball in college, it is fair to say that the success of this program is not in question.

Tri has committed to Western Washington University to pursue her volleyball career. Tri led the team this season with hitting percentage and racked up 58 blocks through 26 games.

Senior Peri Hoshock is committed to The Citadel, where she obtained a full-ride scholarship. Hoshock led the team in blocks with 61, while obtaining a hitting percentage of 0.228 pct.

Lastly, senior Isabella Christensen is committed to The United States Air Force Academy. Christensen stands at 6´2 and averages 3.2 kills per set.

Every single girl on the team contributed to their season. The Vikings have obtained a 21-5 record at the time of this writing, and there are no plans of slowing down.
