After six months of waiting for spring sports to start, students put in the effort to show off their talent and be placed in the sport of their liking. The coaches have started to set their goals for this year’s group of athletes that are lucky to be on their roster. “We will have some experienced players with a history of success in our top three varsity positions, but we will be relatively inexperienced at the other three spots and will rely upon a group of girls who have only been on the team for a year,” Coach Larry Palmer said.

Monday, February 29, marks the start of Spring Sports; Track, Tennis, Golf, Soccer, Softball and Baseball hopefuls have started tryouts with strong competitive spirits. Some wait all year to be able to participate on these Viking sports teams, and the anticipation has finally come to an end.

The turnout for each sport was either average or outstanding in reference to how many positions there are to fill.

Tennis had a lower headcount than Coach Jeff Leer expected; however, he still believes they will have to cut several girls before the season begins.

“We hope to compete for the league title this year and get back to state again this year and try to place in the state tournament,” Leer said.

Golf, led by Coach Larry Palmer, had almost a perfect count of about 12-15 kids who were interested for there are only about that many positions available.

“My expectation is that the team will need some time to improve and grow in order to be a top contender, but that by the second half of the season we will be much improved. Even with so many young players, we are aiming high and our goal is to be one of the top two teams in WESCO,” Palmer said.

Track, the only no cut sport with ample events available for all students, had a turnout of almost 180 kids according to Head Coach Jeff Page. He hopes to, “win lots of meets, be Wesco team champions, [and] have a lot of kids qualify for the state track meet.”

Boys soccer had about 43 people sign up at the preseason meeting.

“We have a lot of hard work and commitment ahead of us, and I hope they are up to the task of representing the greater Lake Stevens community with both pride and professionalism. As with every year, I hope the kids learn to face adversity with calm determination, as they continue on their path to becoming caring, compassionate and responsible citizens,” said Coach Christopher Shanholtzer.

Softball had an attendance of about 36 kids at the preseason meeting who wanted to try out for the teams.

“The expectation is the athletes work hard everyday and compete within themselves to be better everyday. We will make a run at the state tournament is the goal,” Coach Sarah Hirsch said.

Baseball, according to Coach Rodger Anderson, had around 45 students show up at the high school and 21 at Cavelero for the meeting after semester finals.

“My expectation is that we’ll play good, smart baseball and compete every game. Hopefully we’ll win a league championship and continue on to the state tournament,” Anderson said.

Everyone is excited for the start of the spring sports season and are all hopeful for an outstanding showing of grit and perspiration.
