Halloween is right around the corner. This year, make Halloween special and unique by making a costume. “It’s also more gratifying that way because it feels like it’s yours instead of just buying one,” says sophomore Katheryn Orr.

Halloween costumes seem to be a common stress factor in the fall, but making a costume can relieve a lot of that stress. Don’t want to spend a ton of money on a costume that’ll probably only get worn once? Make one! Get together with friends or a romantic interest to make costumes that will be unique and fun to wear on this special night of the year.

An easy group costume that will only cost a trip to a local thrift store are the characters of Breakfast Club. Find fun and manageable eighties wear that mimic each individual character.

For an adorable couple’s costume, go as Pongo and Purdy from 101 Dalmatians. For this quick and easy costume, round up black and white clothing and black and white face paint. Add spots all over for the dalmatian effect with the face paint.

For something eerily terrifying, use makeup sew a mouth shut. This easy makeup illusion requires black eyeshadow, thread, and false eyelash glue. Add three dots above the upper lip and two dots under the lower lip. Then, measure and cut four pieces of thread. Use the eyelash glue to glue the thread to each dot so that it gives the illusion that the mouth is sewn shut.

And finally, for something sweet, transform into a unicorn. Take a smaller piece of paper and roll it into a cone. Glue the cone to a headband to create the horn. Then, put on some bright and colorful clothing.

One student at LSHS agrees that making a costume is a lot better than buying one.

“I think it’s cheaper most of the time to make a costume,” says sophomore Katheryn Orr. “It’s also more gratifying that way because it feels like it’s yours instead of just buying one.”

Instead of simply buying a costume this year, have some fun with it and go out and make one.
