Junior Katrina Mueller broke a year old girls’ Diving record for total points scored on October 10 at the girls swim meet held at Mariner High School. The meet was a huge success for Mueller, and the entire team, despite the level of competition from other schools

“There was a ton of girls. We had 2A, 3A, and 4A girls all competing last Saturday, and we were competing to qualify for state. For a 4A school to qualify for state we had to score a 365, and if you get a score of 365 you automatically qualify. I qualified for state, my score was 393,” Mueller said.

The meet at Mariner was only the first of three meets Mueller and girls swim had the chance to qualify for state and breaking a record was the last thing on Mueller’s mind.

“There’s three dive qualifiers, so I was like, ‘no pressure, if I don’t get it this time I can try again next Saturday and try to qualify for state’… but I ended up doing better than I expected and my coach was so surprised…I could tell something was up because she looked so excited. She came up to me and said, ‘You just took first place in the meet and got a score of 393,'” Mueller said.

Even with a tremendous accomplishment like breaking a school record, Mueller still stays grounded and knows she needs to improve in order to reach her personal goals for state.

“For state, I’m hoping to get in the 400 point [range]. But for placement, I don’t even know. The girls at state are so good. Last year I went to state and did so bad. My goal is to make it to the finals…I didn’t make it last year,” Mueller said.
