Nightlock slides easily into a slot on the bottom of a door and into a hole in the ground to barricade the door. The device was chosen for its strong role in the A.L.I.C.E program. “You couldn’t open the door if you wanted to,” Principal Eric Cahan said.

Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, or more commonly known as A.L.I.C.E., is a nationally-renowned training program for schools to use in the event of intruders. The Lake Stevens District has recently added a door barricade, Nightlock, to their safety system in hopes to improve the school’s security.

“A.L.I.C.E. empowers the person who is the potential victim to put themselves on the offensive. For example when we used to have lockdowns, we locked the door, pulled down the shutters…so now they are saying we lock the doors barricade them and then plan an exit strategy,” principal Eric Cahan said.

Cahan stated a subcontractor is working on installing the Nightlocks and should be finished by the beginning of May. After that they will continue to instruct staff on the use of the device and ensure a safer environment for staff and students.
